Working in Barrington

Barrington got its name in the 1880s from developer William Simpson, after his hometown of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. It was incorporated as a borough in 1917 from the former Centre Township. It borders Bellmawr, Haddon Heights, Haddonfield, Lawnside, Magnolia, Runnemede and Tavistock, and much of its housing dates from the 1950s and 1960s.

Census estimates (ACS 2020-2024) describe Barrington's housing like this: The median home was built in 1960; the largest share was built in the 1950s; 79% predate 1980; 56% are detached houses and 0% are twins or townhouses. Big Cat General Contractor works in the neighborhoods throughout the borough.

Local considerations

What to know before a project in Barrington

  • Permits. Permits and inspections in Barrington are handled by Barrington Borough under New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code. Roofing, structural changes, decks, basements and most plumbing and electrical work need a permit. We file the applications and meet the inspectors.
  • Site conditions. Much of South Jersey sits on sandy coastal-plain soils. They drain well in many places, but low spots can hold water. We check grading and gutters before building decks or finishing basements.
  • Storms. Nor'easters and the remnants of tropical storms bring heavy wind and rain. We use high-wind shingle nailing patterns, sealed flashing and secure gutter hangers.
  • Post-war construction. About 50% of Barrington homes were built before 1960. Houses from that era may have galvanized pipes, undersized electrical service, little insulation and lead paint. We check these at the estimate.
