Moorestown, New Jersey

Remodeling that respects Moorestown's mix of old and new

Moorestown takes its name from Thomas Moore, who settled along the King's Highway in 1722 and ran a tavern there. The village that grew around that road is now the Moorestown Historic District, a 47-acre area listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 for buildings dating from 1720 to 1940. Around it, the township added mid-century neighborhoods and, more recently, newer developments. Today about 21,000 people live here.

That range is visible in the Census numbers: about one in five Moorestown homes was built before 1940, while nearly one in five was built after 2000. Big Cat General Contractor handles both ends. An 1890s house near Main Street needs a different plan than a 2005 colonial off Route 38, and we treat them that way, including in Moorestown-Lenola, Stanwick and West Moorestown.

These are the services Moorestown homeowners ask about most, with the details that tend to matter here.

Kitchen Remodeling

In older homes, a kitchen remodel often means working around plaster walls, original trim and older wiring. In newer homes, the goal is usually an updated layout with better storage, lighting and finishes. We coordinate cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring, electrical and plumbing as one project.

Local considerations

Local considerations in Moorestown

  • The historic district. National Register listing recognizes a district's significance, but local rules are what govern changes. If your home is in or near the historic district, check with the township before changing siding, windows, roofing materials or other visible exterior features. We can plan materials and details with that review in mind.
  • Age of the housing stock. Census estimates put Moorestown's median home at 1969, with about 62 percent of homes built before 1980. That means plenty of houses with original baths, dated kitchens and roofs approaching replacement, along with lead paint considerations in pre-1978 homes.
  • Weather. Freeze-thaw cycles, summer humidity and nor'easters are hard on older wood trim, flashing and gutters. Well-detailed flashing, sealed penetrations and good attic ventilation do more to prevent leaks and ice dams than roofing material alone.
  • Permits. Moorestown Township's construction office issues permits under the state Uniform Construction Code. Structural work, decks, finished basements and plumbing or electrical changes need permits and inspections, and we include them in the scope.
FAQ

Questions from Moorestown homeowners

Does Big Cat work on older homes in the Moorestown Historic District?

Yes. Older homes need more investigation up front, and exterior changes may need local review. We plan materials and scope around those requirements and tell you what to check with the township before work begins.

Can you update a kitchen without changing the character of an older house?

Yes. We can keep or match trim profiles, choose cabinet styles that suit the house and route new wiring and plumbing with as little disruption to original plaster as practical.

Do you also work in newer Moorestown neighborhoods?

Yes. Much of our work in newer homes is finishing basements, replacing builder-grade kitchens and baths, and adding or replacing decks.

How long does a bathroom remodel usually take?

It depends on size and selections. A straightforward hall bath typically takes a few weeks of on-site work once materials are in hand; inspections and custom items can add time. We give you a schedule with the written estimate.
